The abandonment of pets is a global tragedy. Every year, millions of dogs and cats are abandoned around the world by their owners who consider that they are a problem in the organization of their holidays. While some are taken directly to shelters, still too many are abandoned by their masters on the public highway, in the countryside or in the forest, exposing them to road accidents, traps, hunger, thirst and wandering.
Each year, in France alone, more than 100 000 dogs and cats are abandoned (most likely an underestimated figure), or one every three minutes. This figure places our country in the first European rank of abandonment of companion animals. It is in summer, in the period before the waves of holiday departures, that abandonments are most numerous. They are estimated to number nearly 60,000 in France alone.
Every year, in France alone, more than 100 000 dogs and cats are abandoned. This figure, which is far from reflecting reality because no national census exists, places our country first European rank of abandonment of pets. It is in summer, in the period preceding the waves of holiday departures, that abandonments are the most numerous. They are estimated to number nearly 60,000 in France alone.
Fighting against abandonment means first fighting against its causes : death, going to a retirement home where pets are not allowed, divorce, moving, economic difficulties, life accidents, education problems, cleanliness and, above all, impulse buying. We firmly believe that we should focus our efforts on impulse buying because the arrival of a pet in a home must be a commitment made knowing the constraints, the responsibilities that adoption implies. This is why Solidarite-Peuple-Animal has drawn up its charter for the responsible owner with the 15 commitments that all owner must make towards their animal.
C’est pour alerter et sensibiliser à la fois le grand public, les institutionnels et les politiques que l’association Solidarite-Peuple-Animal a créé la Journée mondiale contre l’abandon des animaux de compagnie, dès 2019, date de la première édition.
It is to alert and raise awareness among the general public, institutions and politicians that the Solidarite-Peuple-Animal association created the World Day Against the Abandonment of Pets, in 2019, date of first edition.
Creating a World Day Against Pet Abandonment is essential to:
MOBILIZE, all together, individuals, companies, associations, institutions and politics
DENOUNCE a plague that appears every year in the world and exposes pets to loneliness, wandering, hunger, thirst, accident and death.
RAISE AWARENESS of individuals, institutions and politicians so that abandonment is not considered as inevitable.
ACT by signing the responsible owner's charter to engage with his animal, and by relaying and sharing the message of the World Day against Abandonment to invite institutions and politicians to implement concrete measures to reduce abandonment.
Since 2021, our the World Day Against the Abandonment of Pets is supported by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food, which has made abandonment its priority.
